Rose Valley…A Top Place to Live in Delaware County

One of the Top Places to Live in Delaware County…a Local Realtor’s Opinion.

Rose Valley…A Small but Prestigious Rose Valley Image
Borough Rich in History in Delaware County

Being a Realtor, people ask me all the time where the top places to live in DelawareCounty are. Now, I am not biased. I love my county. I was born and raised here, have worked all over the county and have lived in a few Townships/Boroughs.

But, I just wanted to bring attention to one very small borough that is very rich in history, beauty and prestige…the borough of RoseValley. Now, I do not live in the Borough but I have had the pleasure of driving through the community on almost a daily basis, attended high school dances at the Old Mill (which is a now a great spot for Weddings and upscale parties), and I rode horses through it’s hills when I was a kid. I have also had many opportunities to tour many of its beautifully architectured homes and buildings…many of which you cannot see behind its thick masses of mature landscape.

The Borough also situated within Wallingford/Swarthmore School District (ranked one of the top ten school districts in the Nation by ‘Money Magazine’) with short commute to Downtown Philadelphia, and also within a close proximity to Wallingford and Moylan Train Stations.

Rose Valley is only 0.7 square miles (population was 944 at the 2000 census). It was settled by Quaker farmers in 1682. In 1901 Rose Valley was founded as an Arts and Crafts community by architect Will Price, who bought 80 acres of it’s land and left a legacy of impressive architecture, a preserved landscape, and a regional theatre, the Hedgerow Theatre (founded in 1923), as well as an artistic community that includes writers, painters, and architects. The Hedgerow Theatre plays a large part as the center of RoseValley society. They give first class performances in both adult and children theatre. Their School of Rock also offers classes and workshops for our youth. The Hedgerow Theater is truly a treasure to RoseValley and the surrounding communities.

As a former mayor said, “RoseValley is an island of non-conformity.” The Rose Valley Historic District, covering essentially the entire borough, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

In my opinion, if you are looking for a quiet community tucked back in a mature setting, with upscale amenities, but still close enough to the city…Rose Valley is and most likely always will be…a top place to live in Delaware County.
